Local Places of Interest
Cross Cottage is in a peaceful semi rural location on the borders of
Dorset and Wiltshire, and ideally placed for touring holiday.
Immediately surrounding the village on the borders of Wiltshire and
Dorset is some of the finest countryside in southern England, which
forms part of the Cranborne Chase, an Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty. The landscape is surrounded with attractive villages where most
cottages are built of the same Chilmark limestone used to build
Salisbury
Cathedral. Salisbury itself is at most a 30 minute car
journey or 13 minute train
excursion from Tisbury. Other attractions in the area are
numerous - within an hour's drive are Stonehenge and Avebury ,
Longleat, Stourhead
Gardens, Wilton House, Old Wardour Castle, Sparkford Motor Museum, the
Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton as well as the Georgian city
of Bath, with its newly opened spa complex (and revolting parking . . .
use the park and ride). The South Dorset coastline,
now designated a World Heritage site, is also less than an hour's car
journey away and certainly well worth exploring .We are actually 5
miles from Shaftesbury (of Goldhill 'Hovis ad'fame) so
although in an unknown area we are actually very well placed. For
